LAST MONTH'S MEETING:Kelley Adkins presented one of his excellent demonstrations for us and had a great workshop the next morning on cascade junipers. From the looks of the finished products, it was too bad if you missed it.
THIS MONTH'S MEETING:The May meeting will be held on May 21 at the Garden Center and will be our 3rd annual auction. The club will accept all donations of bonsai related materials (trees, tools, books, pots, etc) or other Oriental items that you'd like to donate. There will also be a bazaar, where members may offer their items for sale directly to other club members. If you plan to participate in the bazaar, please remember that you are expected to donate something for the auction as your contribution to the club effort. Plan to be at the meeting early enough to have your donated items included in the auction. Oh, and don't forget your check book....we don't accept credit cards!
NEXT MONTH'S MEETING:There will be no meeting next month due to the Spring Weekend event scheduled to be held on June 14 and 15. Lots of hands are needed, so plan to come. Setup will be on Friday evening, June 13 from 6-9, and Bob Grealish will need help with arranging the display early (8am) Saturday morning. (Speaking of the display, we'll need lots of trees, so start planning which ones you'd like to show.) We will also need people to help with breaking the show down on Sunday from about 5-7. The more hands we have, the quicker we'll get home. If you haven't been contacted for a specific committee yet, see George Herbel at the next meeting or call him for the list of jobs available. I know we will need kitchen help, so give me (Rose Grealish) a call if you'd like to bake or contribute something, or help out in the kitchen. Also, see Herb Geissler's note in this newsletter about the workshops.
One of the objectives of the annual Bonsai Spring Weekend is to create
better awareness and appreciation of bonsai throughout the general
public. Towards that end, bonsai workshops provide beginners with the
opportunity to create their own bonsai with the guidance and help of
experienced members of the PBS. Workshops will be conducted on
Saturday, June 14 from 2pm to 4pm
Sunday, June 15 from 10am to 12 noon.
For an affordable $25.00, each student will be provided with all
necessary materials and instructions to turn a nursery stock plant into
a personally styled bonsai. Depending on plant availability in June,
the trees will be either Juniper procumbens or Shimpaku juniper.
Students can sign up and pay on the day of the workshop. If you have
friends or family members that would be interested in participating,
encourage them to attend. The workshops are fun as well as informative.
Each workshop is expected to have 12-18 students. To aid the
instructors, we need experienced advisors to assist the students in
their work. We would like three or four members to help the students
with trimming, shaping, wiring and potting in each workshop. In
addition, a clinic table will be set up to provide free advice on
styling and care to anyone bringing (or buying) a bonsai. Again, we
need experienced advisors to help field questions that attendees might
have about their plants. If you would like to share your knowledge and
enjoyment in creating bonsai with beginners, please sign up as an
advisor for one or more of the workshops or for the clinic table. To
sign up, call Herb Geissier (after 5).
Thanks!
