January 1998

THIS MONTH'S MEETING: Bob Grealish will be doing a carving demonstration and a phoenix graft. This technique involves carving out a section of driftwood and inserting the living younger plant into the carving. It gives the illusion of an old tree with lots of driftwood when in reality it is just a young tree. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, Jan 21 at 7:00pm at the Pittsburgh Civic Garden Center, 1059 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15232.

FUTURE PROGRAMS:
February 20: Sale of pots donated by Anna Snyder's family.
March 18: Potting Clinic

SEASONAL CARE:< Keith Scott has agreed to do an article on seasonal care every month. Any questions during winter - WRITE to me and Keith will answer questions in the newsletter. Keith writes:

Since for one reason or many others I've been saddled, bridled and broken into doing this blurb every month, I'll need to set forth a few "words of a kind" about how I'm going to treat these monthly diatribes. First the information will be nothing new, only the reeky memories of past days, months, winters. Next, at times the blurbs will be short; e.g., water your plants, or one of my all time favorites, "watch for bugs". Further, I don’t know how your plants are being cared for, their light, humidity, soil conditions, water or the lack of it. It always amazes me that whenever I’m asked about a particular problem the inquisitor replies that that is not the way he would do thus and so. Why ask me? Therefore for this monthly insult let me state that January is a time to clean tools, scrub lime deposits off of pots, read bonsai books, or better yet look at lots of bonsai pictures, borrow my thousands of slides and pictures and ogle every one. In short survive! Upon wiser examination, my editor suggest that I put in just how to clean lime deposits from pots. Please keep in mind that the reason I previously didn’t go into detail about how pots are cleaned, is that everyone probably has a long standing family recipe for every cleaning chore. However, I use coarse steel wool and a scraper such as a cabinet scraper to chop off the really encrusted deposits. Many who will try this will find it hard work. My rejoinder is: don’t clean the pots, watch I Love Loosely reruns on your TV.

So there you have it: work this time of year is hard to come by in this part of the country. But take heart, you could live in Maine or some other enchanted spot where the winters are really long.
