Do you know me?

Kevin Haughey - Bonsai Manager, Phipps Conservatory

Did you hear the one about the Animal Biology Major and the Bonsai Manager? No? Well, read on...

"I was attending Penn State and majoring in Animal Biology. I took an elective course in horticulture (it sounded interesting to me). Before I knew it I was hooked and switched my major...I now have a degree in Horticulture and have been with Phipps for five years; three years as Bonsai Manager," reports Kevin. "I met Evelyn Christie in 1993 and she talked about the bonsai workshops put on by the Pittsburgh Bonsai Society (held in Swissvale). It was there that I met Keith Scott and learned about the artistic side of bonsai." Kevin has between 30 and 40 trees. His favorite is the common privet. "It's hard to kill."

Kevin's Advice:"Learn from others, don't be afraid to experiment; and don't get discouraged (but also keep in mind that bonsai is not for everyone)."

Bonsai and Beyond: "I enjoy seeing a plant change over the years, it's not a short-term thing; it's very therapeutic, calming, especially in our hectic world today."

see you at the meeting!
