Notice of regular monthly meeting:

Wednesday January 16th 7 p.m.
Phipps Garden Center
1059 Shady Avenue, Mellon Park

Create your own Saikei!

This is a landscape using rocks and small plants...we will take our creations home and bring them back to our May meeting when we will plant them with small trees, etc.

Keith Scott and Bob Grealish will lead this workshop on cementing rocks together and arranging them in a pot to make a saikei.

Note: You may either bring a pot from home (flat rectangular or oval) or purchase one at the meeting; also feel free to bring your own rocks but some will also be available for purchase.

We hope you can join us!

Please refer to the ANNOUNCEMENTS section of this newsletter for an important message from our President, Bob Grealish.

We greatly appreciate your donated bonsai items for our monthly meeting raffle! Please call Mark Wazenegger 412-921-0125 if you would like to donate items you no longer want.

Bring a tree to a meeting and receive an extra door prize ticket; and if you bring the type of tree being discussed you'll receive two tickets...wow!

To join , send your dues to: Pittsburgh BONSAI Society

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

From Bob Grealish, President...
Due to rising expenses (rent, security, programs, mailing, etc.) the PBS Board considers it necessary to raise dues for 2002. This is only the second time in more than 15 years we have needed to raise dues. The proposed dues are $22 for individuals(a $4 increase) and $32 for families(unchanged). This change must be ratified by a vote of the membership at the January meeting before it becomes official. Please come to the meeting to discuss this issue and enter your vote. Also be prepared to pay your dues at the January meeting. If you have already renewed, we will ask that you pay the $4 difference, if the increased dues are ratified. Dues are required by April 1, 2002, but since we are almost out of money, we would appreciate dues as early as possible in order to reserve the Garden Center for our meetings and Spring weekend.

From Claudia Shields...
"The annual Bonsai Christmas dinner was a great success as the 49 guests were joyous as they celebrated a festive evening. Some interesting and unusual hors d'oeuvres started off the night, followed by dinner and tempting desserts. The highlight of the event came thanks to door prizes donated by our members. Bridget Sullivan (beech tree), Victor Cieslak (large handmade ornament), Ralph Dukstein (lovely bonsai pot), Donna Ramsey (yummy gingerbread house), and a very generous donation from Keith Scott (many stones with bases carved by Keith, a large number of bonsai pots--some handmade, a pot stand and several training pots) [Editor's note: Keith left that evening in a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer] Everyone was thrilled and went home with some lovely things to remember the evening. Thanks to all the people who helped set up and clear. You are always appreciated." [Thank you, Claudia, for another great evening!]

From Donna Ramsey... the Suggestion Box
Members, do you have an idea you would like to share with your bonsai friends? A suggestion of how to do something better? Or make improvements to our club? Please contact me by phone or computer.

WE TIP OUR HAT to Rose Grealish who suggested that some members may prefer to receive their newsletters via e-mail. Members would receive their newsletters sooner and also conserve our resources, not to mention postage. Please indicate on your application if you would prefer this method. [Speaking of hats, that reminds me of a joke...What did one hat say to the other hat? "I'll stay here, you go on a-head!"]
