pleased to announce that Roy will be visiting Pittsburgh Bonsai Society (he
was here about five years ago). Roy was born in the U.S. but spent his
adolescent years in Japan. Roy began working with bonsai in 1959 with his
father; and broadened his knowledge with classes taught by John Naka. In 1965
his parents opened the Fuji Bonsai Nursery, which Roy continues to operate.
He has been the featured artist at many international conventions including
the first World Bonsai Federation Convention in Omiya, Japan. He also serves
as President of the California Bonsai Society.

				ANNOUNCEMENTS

Pittsburgh Bonsai Society Membership Directory Copies will be distributed at
the May 15th meeting and at the Spring Bonsai Show in June. Copies not claimed
by then will be mailed.

Free Weekly Bonsai Classes conclude on Tuesday May 21st What a wonderful
opportunity this is for both novice and experienced members. These free
classes are conducted by Keith Scott (and arranged by Anna Clark!) every
Tuesday evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Swissvale Library which is
located at Monongahela & McClure Avenues. Bring a tree you need some help
with or simply watch, listen and learn. And please bring your own tools; we
will provide the soil and wire.

Bonsai Spring Show & Sale ! June 7th, 8th and 9th What tree will you bring
to the show this year? Start thinking about it now... maybe even bring it to
the Swissvale class if you could use some help in preparing it...don't forget
to clean the pot...and bring a stand if you have one (extras would be truly
appreciated).

"May I volunteer to help with the Bonsai Show?", one might ask. You certainly
may, and there are several areas from which to choose...all of them fun!
Please call George Herbel at (724) 452-5616 to let him know you're available.

We need help in the following areas:
Setting up on Friday afternoon, or Cleaning up on Sunday afternoon*
*(Yes, this can be fun...just sign up and we'll show you)
	Membership/Welcoming Table
Consignment Trees - Sell and record amounts
Silent Auction - Donate bonsai-related items
Goodies Table - Help staff the table; Donate finger foods, drinks, etc.

This is an opportunity to take a more active role in your bonsai society,
especially if you are a relatively new member. We would like to get to know
you, too! And for those seasoned members who have never volunteered, this is
an opportunity to redeem yourselves. George Herbel would love to hear from
you!

"...I trod with bare feet...there is this feeling of goodness coming up into
me from the ground. We are losing much, these days, when we no longer get this
naked contact with the earth. The sensation of touch seems to be fading, and
lazily we look at things with our eyes...ignoring the vast range of emotion
that is within the scope of hand or foot. Few think of caressing a flower and
enjoying the feel of its form and texture... or know the pleasure the hand can
get from the surface of a tree trunk...We are poor creatures that we should
call ourselves civilized, we who have only these blunted powers."

New York, 1935
